Remembering The Augustów Roundup
GIBY, POLAND - JULY 09, 2023: Wooden crosses and a monument in honor of the victims of the Augustow roundup in Giby, Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland on July 09, 2023. The Augustów roundup, a haunting post-WWII military operation in Poland, targeted anti-communist members of the Home Army (AK) and other underground forces of the Polish resistance movement, from July 10 to July 25, 1945. About 2,000 were apprehended, and around 600 mysteriously disappeared, suspected to be executed and buried in Russia or Belarus. This tragedy is the largest Soviet crime on Polish lands after WWII, known as 'second Katyn' or 'Podlaski Katyn.' This historical event holds significant importance in understanding the past.
