Funeral Of Former President Sebastián Piñera In Chile.
Thousands of people are attending the farewell to former President Sebastian Pinera Echenique, who passed away at the age of 74, following a helicopter accident in Lake Ranco, southern Chile, on February 6, 2024. The event is taking place at the former national congress in Santiago de Chile, on February 8, 2024. The former president served as President on two occasions, from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022. It was during his last term that the social outbreak of 2019 occurred, when he declared war on the people of Chile through his own words. This led to a toll of 34 people dead as a result of state repression, more than 400 victims of ocular trauma due to police brutality, over 3,000 detainees, and 6,800 victims of state violence according to the INDH - the national human rights institute - which includes 194 victims of sexual violence. There were also more than 300 attacks on the press covering the protests. Sebastian Pinera was under investigation for his involvement in serious human rights violations during his last government.
