UML Cadres Take Onto Street Of Nepal Protesting Arrest Of Former PM KP Sharma Oli

Nepal Police extinguish a fire set on tires by supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) during a protest in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 28, 2026. The demonstration demands the release of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who has been arrested on charges related to actions during the Gen-Z protest of last September. Protesters also burn a report from the High Level Investigation Commission, which was formed to investigate the events of the Gen-Z protest. The protest follows a decision made at the central secretariat meeting held at the party headquarters in Lalitpur, which directed mass organizations to lead protests on behalf of the party. The meeting also decided to pursue legal and political actions against the arrest of party chair KP Sharma Oli. The report attributes the response to criminal negligence and recklessness, citing a failure to act on prior intelligence about possible escalation that led to multiple deaths. During the youth-led protests, a total of 77 people were killed, and government and private property worth billions were destroyed. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
