Protest In Nepal Demanding Release Of Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Turns Violent, Multiple Injured And Arrested

Supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) raise the party flag during a protest in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 29, 2026. The demonstration calls for the release of party chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli from police custody. Protests have continued in Nepal since Oli's arrest on March 28, related to the use of force during a protest in September of the previous year. Tensions have escalated as supporters face off with police, with reports of stone-throwing by demonstrators and baton charges by police. The UML announced nationwide protests following Oli's arrest, demanding his release and the resignation of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. The party calls for an impartial investigation into incidents from September 8 and 9, 2025, and seeks the scrapping of a report led by Gauri Bahadur Karki, which they claim is biased. They also demand a fair investigation into acts of vandalism, arson, and looting during the protests, and legal action against those involved. The new government under Prime Minister Balendra Shah has accused Oli in connection with deaths during the September 2025 protests, leading to charges related to homicide and his detention for investigation.
