Kashmiri Protests against India's proposal to allow refugees from Pakistan

Indian government forces detain, Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid an Indian Politician and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and patron of Awami Ithaad Party, a pro-Indian political party, during a protest against India's proposal to allow refugees from the west of Pakistan to settle in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir on December 22, 2016 in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, India. The Indian government's proposal to allow West Pakistani refugees who moved to the disputed region of Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir to settle permanently, in accordance with the 1947 Partition of India, has been opposed by the both pro India parties and anti-Indian resistance leaders from Kashmir. These leaders say that the move has the aim of changing the demography of the state and that they will resist this move to protect its identity. They were reacting to reports in local media that the state government, on the instructions of Indian government (the Centre,) will issue domicile certificates to West Pakistan refugees as they were facing difficulty in getting jobs in India. The refugees have been demanding relief and rehabilitation from the government for the last 67 years. Indian Administered Jammu and Kashmir residents all hold permanent resident certificates that allow them the privilege to own property and to seek employment opportunities in local government.
