Evacuation in Western Thessaloniki due to an operation of disarming a British WWII bomb
In the area of Kordelio in the tank of a gas station was found a non-detonated WWII bomb from the British allies, on February 12, 2017. The army took care of the operation that has to evacuate 75.000 citizens away from their houses in a radius of 1.9KM. Many of them moved by taxis, cars and support of volunteers cooperating with the local authorities. People moved mostly into schools. In the area was also a refugee camp, Softex. 350 refugees visited during the operation the museums of the city. Τhe army moved the bomb to a military shooting field in Askos where they detonated it. The operation was serious due to the unstable and bad condition of the bomb. (Photo by Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto)
