The famous “Metworst” racing was celebrated in Boxmeer

February 27th. The Metworst Racing is an ancient horse race which is held on Monday Carnaval, in Boxmeer each year. Some even believe that the tradition would still come from an ancient Germanic fertility ritual. In earlier times were unmarried young riders through the drive through the fields of the Gods tried to obtain fertility for the coming year. Not just anyone can participate in the racing, just 'young apprentices' which means unmarried boys, were born in the town of Boxmeer and raised and living in the city of Boxmeer. The winner of this elimination race, will be calling the 'King of the Metworst, which is the highest honor that can be achieved in Boxmeer. (Photo by Romy Arroyo Fernandez/NurPhoto)
