Spinalonga, the abandoned leper colony in Crete
Spinalonga is an abandoned leper colony in Crete island in Greece. There is old Venetian fortifications also. The island was used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957, marking it as one of the last leper colonies in Europe. The location become recently widely known from Victoria's Hislop book "The island" and then from the television series "To nisi" translated as "The island". (Photo by Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto)
