Turkey Prepares For Local Elections

A photo taken in Ankara, Turkey on June 21, 2018 shows a young supporter of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) chanting slogans under his party's flag in the Kizilay district. Local elections are set to be held across Turkey on March 31, 2019 in order to designate the local authorities. Turks will go the polls to elect municipal mayors, provincial and municipal councilors in addition to local non-partisan neighborhood presidents (mukhtars). The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) agreed on a collaboration for the elections, while the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the opposition IYI (Good) Party with a possible support by the conservative opposition Saadet (Felicity) Party are setting a new alliance to oppose the pro-government's People's Alliance. On the other hand, the pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) is expected to participate in the elections with no alliances with a goal to regain the southeastern provinces ruling by appointed trustees.
