Eviction in Madrid - February 21, 2014

Arturo Suarez Cadiz and his wife Eve Borja Gimenez, both unemployed, have two sons and one daughter: Jose 17 years old, Sanara, 16 years old, and Jesus, 9 years old. They have occupied an apartment, property of the state social housing company EMVS. They can not find a formal job and their income, which comes from selling clothes, has decreased in the last years as a consequence of the economic crisis. They have tried for years to negotiate to pay a low protected rent, since they say their income it is not enough to rent an apartment and support the family at the same time. The state social housing company, which is under a privatizing process, demands their eviction. The eviction was finally postponed for a month with the help of housing rights' activists.
