The Elephant In Udawalawe National Park
Baby elephants walk into the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home to drink milk in Udawalawe, about 160 kilometers southeast of Colombo on August 24, 2019. The Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe National Park was established in 1995 to rehabilitate orphaned or sick elephants and then release them back into the wild. The Wildlife Conservation Department has planned to conduct an island-wide census on wild elephants on the 13th and 14th of September 2019. The previous census of wild elephants was conducted by the Wildlife Department back in 2011 and the number of wild elephants in the country was calculated at 5879.
