Tumpe Traditional Ceremony In Central Sulawesi

The Batui indigenous people are accompanied by local residents carrying Maleo (Macrocephalon maleo) eggs wrapped in palm leaves at the Tumpe traditional ceremony in Batui Village, Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia on 2 December 2019. Tumpe which in the local language means the beginning or the first is a traditional ritual which has become a tradition and has been implemented for more than 400 years. The ritual is in the form of delivering the first eggs produced by Maleo birds. The number of eggs delivered is as many as the number of houses occupied by residents in the area. The egg became a symbol of offering and loyalty to carry out orders by the Batui people to the king and his family. (Photo by Basri Marzuki/NurPhoto)
