Dal Lake is one of most prominent lakes in Kashmir

Srinagar, Indian Administered Kashmir, India - APRIL 22, 2015 - A boat is moored in the middle of the Dal lake on April 22, 2015 in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir State, India. Dal Lake is one of most prominent lakes in Kashmir and one of the major tourist attractions in Srinagar City. The lake has been battling pollution and encroachments with it shrinking from 25 sq km to 13 sq km since the 1980s due to neglect and a separatist revolt, according to environmental activists. The authorities are trying arrest the flow of city sewage into the lake, and also planning to shift some families living alongside the lake periphery. Though these majors have been very slow to implement and there are estimates that during the summers when tourist season is at its peak roughly 100,000 liters of sewage from houseboats spews into the lake, feeding weeds and choking the lake and its aquatic life of oxygen. The floods last year in September have also hit the lake ecosystem and there has been renewed effort by the authorities to stop further encroachments that have come up after floods.
