Demonstration in Warsaw, Poland

Over 50, 000 people from across Poland and Warsaw came out into the streets to take part in a massive demonstration organized by the Committee for the Protection of Democracy (KOD) in the capital of Poland, Warsaw, on December 12, 2015. The demonstration started in front of the Constitutional Tribunal Court, which is at the center of the political crisis in Poland. In recent weeks, the newly elected government that is headed by the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) has made several decisions and court appointments to the Constitutional Tribunal Court, the highest court in the land, that have been deemed unconstitutional by the Court itself. On Friday, December 11, 2015, the Chief of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Poland, Beata Kempa, refused to publish the Tribunal Court’s ruling which states that the ruling government was in violation of the constitution. Such a refusal is unconstitutional in and of itself. Such massive protests have been unpresented in Poland since the fall of communism in 1989. (Photo by Muhesen Amren/NurPhoto)
