Yoga gained prominence in the west in the 20th century and became popular as a system of physical exercise across the Western world. On December 1, 2016, yoga was listed by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an Intangible cultural heritage. The United Nations (UN) has declared 21 June as the International Yoga Day after adopting a resolution proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
