The demonstration follows a call for strike action and mobilisation by the eight main trade unions and youth organisations. The French government wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Despite accusations that Khadr was mistreated while at Guantanamo the Canadian Federal Government has so far refused to bring him back to Canada. After allegedly throwing a grenade that killed an American soldier. Khadr is a Canadian citizen born in Toronto and is the youngest prisoner held in Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp by the United States.
