Winged termites, also known as alates, are attracted to light and are often the first sign of a termite infestation. They can be seen flying towards windows, light fixtures, and other sources of light like street lamps and porch lights in the late afternoon and early evening, like most nocturnal insects. Flying termites become visible when their colony swarms. Heavy rainfall and warm, humid temperatures provoke swarms, among other triggers. After a few minutes, flying termites shed their wings and crawl around on the floor, eventually dying. Termites (Isoptera) are invertebrates belonging to the detritophagous eusocial group of insects, which eat decaying plant material like wood, leaf litter, and soil humus. They are sometimes called ''white ants'' because of their pale color and physical similarities to ants. Here, swarms of alates are flying around an LED light bulb, while a common house gecko lizard waits to prey on them at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on May 28, 2024.

Iranian men are sitting at an outdoor cafe in Iran's first nuclear seaport city of Bushehr, located in Bushehr province on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf, 1090km (677 miles) south of Tehran, Iran, on April 28, 2024. The Bushehr nuclear power plant, aimed at providing electricity and diversifying energy resources, began construction in 1975 after Iran signed a contract with the German company Siemens. However, the Islamic Revolution in 1979 brought the construction to a halt, and Germany ceased work due to political sanctions. After a prolonged delay, in 2004, the Islamic Republic of Iran entered into an agreement with Russia to finish the project. Eventually, 27 years after construction began, the Bushehr nuclear power plant became fully operational and was connected to the national electricity grid in 2011, marking it as Iran's first and only active nuclear power plant.

Iranian men are sitting together at an outdoor cafe in Bushehr, Iran, on April 28, 2024. This city is notable for being Iran's first nuclear seaport on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf, located 1090km (677 miles) south of Tehran. The Bushehr nuclear power plant's history dates back to 1975 when Iran signed a contract with the German company Siemens for its construction to provide electricity and diversify energy resources. The project was interrupted by the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and subsequent political sanctions led Germany to cease its involvement. After a prolonged delay, Iran reached an agreement with Russia in 2004 to complete the power plant. Eventually, in 2011, the Bushehr nuclear power plant became operational and was connected to the national electricity grid, marking it as Iran's first and only active nuclear power plant.
