The Basij, officially known as the Niru-ye Moqavemat-e Basij, is a volunteer paramilitary force in Iran under the command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). It was founded on April 30, 1979, by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, to defend the revolution and its values. With an estimated membership of over 20 million, the Basij is one of the largest volunteer militias in the world.
