Ramesh Lekhak (in white), former Nepali Home Minister, is taken to the Kathmandu District Court from the District Government Attorney Office in Kathmandu on March 29, 2026. The Kathmandu District Court grants permission to keep former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in custody for five days for investigation. Both are presented before the court on the second day of their arrest on March 29, 2026. The government accuses them in connection with deaths that occurred during the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, 2025. Authorities have filed charges related to homicide, leading to their detention for investigation. Lekhak is physically presented before the court, while Oli attends the hearing virtually from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj. Oli is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, where doctors say he is dealing with several health conditions. He was admitted after experiencing irregular heart palpitations and has a medical history that includes two kidney transplants. According to the hospital, he is also suffering from multiple conditions including hydronephrosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid-related issues, and atrial fibrillation. Doctors have also detected gallstones. Hospital authorities say Oli is currently receiving treatment under medical supervision at the hospital's Annex-1, bed number 501.

Supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) raise their fists during a protest calling for the release of party chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli from police custody in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 29, 2026. Protests have continued in Nepal demanding Oli's release since his arrest on March 28 over the use of force during a protest in September of the previous year. Supporters and cadres of the CPN-UML have been facing off with police as they take to the streets demanding his release. Tensions escalated after a dispute broke out between protesters and police, with demonstrators reportedly throwing stones and police using baton charges to control the situation. The UML announced nationwide protests following Oli's arrest. Protesters are demanding Oli's release and the resignation of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. The cadres and supporters of Oli are calling for an impartial investigation into incidents that occurred on September 8 and 9, 2025. They have called for the report prepared under the leadership of Gauri Bahadur Karki to be scrapped, terming it biased. The party further demands a fair investigation into acts of vandalism, arson, and looting during the protests, and calls for legal action against those involved. It also stresses the need for a serious probe into the alleged involvement of various non-governmental organizations. The new government under Prime Minister Balendra Shah has accused Oli in connection with deaths that occurred during the protests on September 8 and 9, 2025. Authorities have filed charges related to homicide, leading to his detention for investigation.
