A laborer carries a few sacks of rice bags near Colombo, Sri Lanka, on January 17, 2025. The ongoing red rice shortage has a particular impact on the Hindu community, which struggles to obtain the essential ingredient for this year's Thai Pongal celebrations. Sri Lanka faces a notable shortage of red rice, a staple with significant cultural and dietary importance, particularly in the Northern and Southern provinces. This shortage is attributed to a combination of factors, including supply chain disruptions, changes in agricultural practices, and previous government policies. Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe points to the previous government's distribution of 20 kilograms of rice per person ahead of elections as a key factor exacerbating the current shortage.

The localizer antenna facility, essential for guiding aircraft landings near the runway at Muan International Airport in Muan-gun, South Jeolla Province, South Korea, is damaged after a collision with Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 on December 29, 2024. Multiple international aviation experts point out that, unlike the standard design, where such facilities are placed at runway level or elevated on steel towers, the facility at Muan International Airport is secured with thick concrete on a 2-3 meter-high mound of soil. This unconventional design is highlighted as a potential key factor contributing to the tragedy. Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, a Boeing 737-800 carrying 181 people, skids off the runway and collides with a wall, triggering a devastating explosion. Only two crew members seated near the rear emergency exit survive. With 179 confirmed fatalities, this tragedy becomes the deadliest domestic passenger plane crash in South Korean history. Muan International Airport is located approximately 300 km southwest of central Seoul.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised Brazil's growth forecast for 2018. According to the organization, the estimate is for the country to grow by 1.8%, previously equivalent to 2.3%. The IMF still attributes the reduction to the decision to stop truck drivers and the worsening of global economic conditions. IMF Director for the Americas Alejandro Werner said the May truck stoppage that lasted about 10 days was a "very important" factor in this review. Also weighed the uncertainty of the presidential election - whose outcome can still change the growth forecasts down. The IMF has once again stressed the need for a pension reform in Brazil, considered as "a fundamental measure" towards fiscal balance.
