In 29 municipalities in Basilicata, between the provinces of Potenza and Matera, the water crisis continues to be a reality. Although summer has ended months ago, about 140,000 people grapple with extreme water shortages. The Camastra dam, which has been the main water source in the area since 1970 and has been managed since January 2024 by Acque del Sud spa, a newly formed company controlled by the Ministry of Economy, cannot respond as it has reached critical levels. The region's engineers predict it will not be able to meet demands beyond November 22. Drought is a factor, but not the only one, judging by the history of the reservoir.
