The village of Kakstan, once a miners' residential area, is now an open-air museum in Malmberget. Following the mine's expansion and the railway's completion in 1888, there is a surge of workers arriving from across the country, leading to a housing shortage. In response, miners build simple wooden houses from waste materials. The entire Malmberget town moves in 2020/2021 due to mining activities in the area. Underground mining is cost-effective and enables a high level of mechanization and automation. However, it causes deformations in the surface ground that, beyond a certain threshold, can render it impossible to maintain any infrastructure or residential areas in those locations.
