Purple-rumped Sunbird Using Plastics To Build Nest - Animal India

A couple of Purple-rumped Sunbirds (Leptocoma zeylonica) build a nest using natural materials and plastic pieces amidst the leaves beneath a mango tree in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on May 13, 2026. The species, found in southern India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, typically constructs hanging, pear-shaped nests using plant fibers and spiderwebs. Recently, they have adapted to urban environments by incorporating plastic materials into their nests. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto)
