Studies show that the most common reason for Incidents of mass mortality of fish in India is water pollution. Industrial effluents containing heavy metals and hydrocarbons, pesticides from agriculture fields, depletion of dissolved oxygen, plastics, and sewage make their way into water bodies and harm the health of fishes. As per data shared by the National Fisheries Development Board, a total of 1518 marine fish species, 877 freshwater species and 113 brackish-water species were recorded in India in 2012.
