Law enforcement officers in ballistic vests stand outside a supermarket in the Holosiivskyi district where a shooter took hostages in Kyiv, Ukraine, on April 18, 2026. On the afternoon of April 18, the assailant opened fire on civilians in the Holosiivskyi district before taking hostages inside the store. Negotiators attempted contact before KORD officers entered the premises and neutralized the individual. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the attacker was a 58-year-old Moscow-born man. The Interior Ministry reported that he possessed a legally registered carbine and shot four people on the street before killing a fifth hostage inside the supermarket. A sixth victim, a woman around 30 years old, later died in the hospital.
