A member of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) is taken for medical assistance after being injured during a clash with police at an anti-government protest in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 29, 2026. The protest calls for the release of party chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli from police custody. Demonstrations have continued in Nepal since Oli's arrest on March 28, following allegations of using force during a protest in September of the previous year. Supporters and cadres of the CPN-UML have been confronting police, demanding Oli's release. Tensions escalated when a dispute broke out between protesters and police, with reports of stone-throwing by demonstrators and baton charges by police. The UML announced nationwide protests after Oli's arrest, demanding his release and the resignation of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. Protesters also call for an impartial investigation into incidents on September 8 and 9, 2025, and the scrapping of a report led by Gauri Bahadur Karki, which they claim is biased. The party demands a fair investigation into acts of vandalism, arson, and looting during the protests, and legal action against those involved. They also stress the need for a serious probe into the alleged involvement of various non-governmental organizations. The new government under Prime Minister Balendra Shah has accused Oli in connection with deaths during the protests on September 8 and 9, 2025, leading to charges related to homicide and his detention for investigation.

Tensions escalated after a dispute broke out between protesters and police, with demonstrators reportedly throwing stones and police using baton charges to control the situation. The UML announced nationwide protests following Oli's arrest. Protesters are demanding Oli's release and the resignation of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. The cadres and supporters of Oli are calling for an impartial investigation into incidents that occurred on September 8 and 9, 2025. They have called for the report prepared under the leadership of Gauri Bahadur Karki to be scrapped, terming it biased. The party further demands a fair investigation into acts of vandalism, arson, and looting during the protests, and calls for legal action against those involved. It also stresses the need for a serious probe into the alleged involvement of various non-governmental organizations. Gauri Bahadur Karki, former Chief Justice and Chair of the high-level inquiry committee formed to investigate the atrocities committed during the Gen-Z protest of September 2025, arrives at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to submit the final report in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 8, 2026. The inquiry commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki submits its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki, investigating the casualties and destruction during the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9, 2025. A team including commission coordinator Karki, former DIG Bigyanraj Sharma, and legal expert Bishweshwor Bhandari hands over the report at the Office of the Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar. The Gen-Z protest of September last year calls for transparency and accountability, as well as an end to the social media ban, and turns violent near the federal parliament. In response, police forces use water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition, even firing from within the parliament building after protestors breach the gates and set the entrance ablaze. At least 77 people are confirmed dead in the protest to date, while nearly two dozen protestors are shot by the security forces on a single day. The next day, after rising violence and protest, then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is adamant about leaving power, resigns and is succeeded by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister. Oli publicly denies accusations of ordering a crackdown on protestors, but his administration is heavily criticized for its handling of the unrest.
