Lifeguard Shortage At New York Beach Opening.

General view of Coney Island Beach in New York officially opens its doors on Saturday, May 27, 2023. There are also Rockaway, Brighton, Manhattan, Midland and Orchard beaches. Hundreds of citizens and tourists visit the beaches this summer 2023. The opening of the city's beaches also comes amid a national shortage of lifeguards, driven in part by low pay, the Parks Department has nearly 500 lifeguards in the process of reinstatement or training, the city needs 1,400 to fully staff them.
