Climate change causes Tidal Basin flooding
A turtle rests on the Tidal Basin sidewalk at high tide, the Washington Monument reflected in the water. The turtle was able to reach the sidewalk due to flooding, which washes over the sidewalk and trees. In 2005, coastal flooding was a rare event at the Basin, but climate change now causes daily flooding. This flooding poses a significant threat to the Basin’s iconic cherry trees.
