Animal India

An Indian grey mongoose mother and her offspring dig up the soil and feed on butterfly and moth larvae or caterpillars in grassland. Sometimes, if the babies do not understand this hunting method, the mother teaches them how to dig the soil. The Indian grey mongoose is a mongoose species native to the Indian subcontinent and West Asia, found in open forests, scrublands and cultivated fields, often close to human habitation. It is bold and inquisitive but wary, seldom venturing far from cover. Its prey includes rodents, snakes, birds' eggs and hatchlings, lizards, and a variety of invertebrates. It breeds throughout the year. This photo was taken at Tehatta, West Bengal; India on 28/06/2023. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto)
