Hamas prime minister
A handout picture released by the press office of Hamas on May 7, 2014, shows Hamas prime minister in the Gaza Strip Ismail Haniya reading the Arabic daily Al-Quds newspaper at his office in Gaza City. The Al-Quds -the Arabic name for Jerusalem- daily has been banned from the Gaza strip, since the Islamic Hamas movement took control of the enclave seven years ago, ousting the then dominant secular Fatah movement which has a strong following in the Israeli occupied Palestinian West Bank. On April 23, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) -- internationally recognised as the sole representative of the Palestinian people -- and the Islamist Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip signed a reconciliation agreement.
