Biden establishes Emmitt Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris congratulate Rev. Wheeler Parker, Jr. on his 56th wedding anniversary while introducing him to speak at a signing ceremony for the creation of the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument. Rev. Parker is a member of the Till family. The monument encompasses the location where Till’s body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River in 1955, and the courthouse in which the perpetrators were tried and acquitted by an all-white jury in Mississippi, and Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Illinois, where his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley had an open-casket funeral for her son. The sight of Till’s beaten and bloated body played a major role in galvanizing the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. (Photo by Allison Bailey/NurPhoto)
