Biden establishes Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument

President Joe Biden speaks during a signing ceremony for a proclamation creating the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument on what would have been Till’s 82nd birthday. The monument encompasses the location where Till’s body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River in 1955, the courthouse where his murderers were tried, and Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Illinois, where his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley had an open-casket funeral for her son. The sight of Till’s beaten and bloated body played a major role in galvanizing the civil rights movement of the 1960s. (Photo by Allison Bailey/NurPhoto)
