Today Independence Day is being celebrated in India. 77 years ago today, India gained independence from British rule in 1947. Here are the pre and post-1947 coins, from left the first woman Prime Minister of India as the third Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi, serving India from 1966 to 1977. The next coin was followed by her father the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, serving India from 1947 to 1964. In the middle is the back side of the first '1950 One Rupee' coin' Minted by the Republic of India after Independence from the British Raj with ''Lion Capital, Ashokan Pillar at Sarnath'' and the next one is the last coin of British rule in India British Minted One Rupee 1947 Crowned head of George VI with the lettering ''GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR’’ and then on the far right/last one, in the reverse Bengal tiger (panthera tigris).
