Short-toed Snake Eagle

The short-toed snake eagle with the characteristic white underside and yellow eyes spotted flying in circles near lake Kerkini in Northern Greece. The scientific name of the bird is Circaetus gallicus, also known as the short-toed eagle, a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. The genus name Circaetus is from the Ancient Greek kirkos, a type of hawk, and aetos, "eagle". Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir in Macedonia, Greece that was created in 1932, it is one of the premier birdwatching sites in Greece, as it is situated along the migratory flyway route.
