Coal Power Plant Contributes To Air Pollution In Capital Jakarta
Smoke ash spews from the chimney of the coal power plant owned by Indonesian Power in Cilegon, Banten province, on September 28, 2023. Ash smoke from burning coal as fuel for steam power plants spreads into the air, causing pollution that endangers the respiratory health of local communities and even the capital city of Jakarta over the past few months. Indonesian Minister of Health Siti Nurbaya said that the largest source of air pollution in Jakarta and its surroundings came from vehicles at 44%, followed by steam power plants at 34%, and other sources. Meanwhile, based on data from the DKI Jakarta Health Service, there were 638,291 cases of respiratory tract infections recorded in the first six months of this year. (Photo by Aditya Irawan/NurPhoto)
