Amazon Drought
Porto Praia Community, (Amazonas) 8th Oct 2023 - With the lowering of the Amazon River's water level, which last Friday (20th) was already 40 cm below the historical record in Manaus, hundreds of riverside communities in Amazonas find themselves virtually isolated. Without even small boats reaching their shores, the population of these villages depends on long walks to connect with the outside world, making it difficult and sometimes impossible to receive essential goods. Even the supply of water has become a problem, something previously unthinkable in the Amazon, and the local government is considering relocating dozens of entire communities that may become unviable with the recurrence of new droughts like this year's -- a likely scenario given the irreversible climate changes.
