Daily Life In India
Iconic yellow ambassador taxis are driving past the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, India, on November 26, 2023. These taxis have been a common sight on the streets of Kolkata since 1958, known for their reliability and affordability, making them a popular choice among locals and tourists alike. The first taxi service in Calcutta began in 1909, with the French Chevy Jean Company's offices originally located on Chowringhee Road, where the Frank Ross Company's drug store is now situated. The meter gauge cars used to run routes from Chowrangi to Dum Dum and from Barrackpur to Bude Budge. The small two-cylinder 'Caron' could accommodate only two passengers. The Kolkata yellow taxi, a 4-door sedan with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, is based on the Hindustan Ambassador, which was produced in India from 1958 to 2014. (Photo by Debajyoti Chakraborty/NurPhoto)
