Catholic parishioners are keeping alive the devotion and prayers to the Black Christ of Esquipulas of Guatemala during the mass being offered by Cardinal Alvaro Ramazzini at St. Patrick's Church in Manhattan, New York, on January 7, 2024. Today, Guatemalans are commemorating the Black Christ of Esquipulas, located 85 miles east of Guatemala City. Cardinal Alvaro Ramazzini, from the diocese of Huehuetenango, is expressing his concerns about the political situation in Guatemala after leaving the country in early December upon hearing that the Guatemalan government had sent a ''strong letter'' against him to the Vatican. Rumors are circulating about an arrest warrant against him since he voiced concerns over a potential coup to prevent Guatemala's elected president, Bernardo Arevalo, from assuming power on January 14, 2024.
