Iran-Basij Paramilitary Force
Members of the Basij special paramilitary force are participating in a military rally in downtown Tehran, Iran, on November 26, 2014. The Basij, officially known as the Niru-ye Moqavemat-e Basij, is a volunteer paramilitary force in Iran that operates under the command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). It was founded on April 30, 1979, by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, with the purpose of defending the revolution and its values.
