US- RELIGION-GUATEMALA
Guatemalan Catholic parishioners are carrying the procession of the replica of the Black Christ of Esquipulas through the streets and avenues of Brooklyn, New York, at St. Joseph's Church on January 14, 2024. They are commemorating the Black Christ of Esquipulas, located 200 kilometers east of Guatemala City. In Brooklyn, New York, the Guatemalan community is celebrating a procession and mass in honor of the venerated Black Christ, Lord of Esquipulas. Despite the cold, which has reached 7 degrees Celsius below zero, the Guatemalans, mostly from Quetzaltenango, Totonicapan, Quiche, and Solola, many in Mayan clothing, are accompanying the image with chants and prayers.
