Bottom Trawling

(Photo by Davide Pischettola/NurPhoto) Research currently being published in Frontiers in Marine Science is showing that bottom trawling, which involves the use of large fishing nets dragged along the seabed, is not only threatening the conservation of animal and plant species in the ocean depths but is also eroding this valuable storage system, leading to the release of significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually. The Commission's Action Plan is clearly aiming to block all fishing in the pursuit of what is considered an extreme ecological idealism. It is seen as absurd to once again impose restrictions on an industry that is among those most affected by recent global crises, even going as far as to arbitrarily ban trawling, which is the sole source of income in many coastal areas.
