Hindu Cleansing Ceremony In Jakarta
Indonesian Hindu devotees are carrying offerings during a cleansing ceremony called 'Melasti' on a boat at a beach in Cilincing, Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 3, 2024. They believe that performing the Melasti ritual is essential ahead of Nyepi Day, The Day of Silence, to cleanse the soul and nature, recharge the supernatural power of the temples' sacred objects, and cleanse the temple paraphernalia. Nyepi Day is a national holiday in Indonesia, dedicated to self-reflection and abstaining from distractions such as entertainment. In 2024, according to the Indonesian Hindu calendar, Nyepi officially falls on Monday, March 11, after the new moon. The celebration lasts for 24 hours, starting at 6 AM and continuing until 6 AM on March 12. (Photo by Afriadi Hikmal/NurPhoto)
