Melasti, Purification Ritual Ahead Bali's Silence Day
A Balinese Hindu is participating in the Melasti ceremony at Masceti Beach in Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia, on March 8, 2024. The ritual, which is believed to purify and cleanse the universe, is held annually ahead of Nyepi, or the Balinese Day of Silence, marking the new year of the Balinese Hindu calendar on March 11, 2024. Balinese will observe the day of seclusion on the island of Bali by refraining from traveling, working, lighting lamps, cooking, or engaging in any other activities. (Photo by Johanes P.
