Amaryllis Christmas Star Flower - Hippeastrum Vittatum

The Amaryllis 'Christmas Star' (Hippeastrum vittatum) is a bulbous perennial known for its large, white flowers adorned with vivid red stripes, set against strap-shaped, dark green leaves. This plant, which blooms in spring, showcases funnel-shaped flowers with bright red petals that feature a white suffusion and a striking central white stripe. It is cold-tolerant and can achieve a circumference of up to 14 cm. Hippeastrum can be propagated through seeds, bulbils, and twin scales, with micropropagation in vitro also being employed on a commercial scale. In recent years, the Amaryllis has gained popularity as a Christmas plant, cherished for its ability to flower indoors during winter and its vibrant, colorful blooms. A branch of the Amaryllis flower blooming from a bulb with a potent aroma was observed in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on 29/03/2024, attracting insects and bees to the garden.
