Campus Protests Continue At Columbia University Over Israel-Gaza War

Protests are continuing for a second week at Columbia University in New York City, on April 26, 2024. Tents are remaining in place as part of the ''Gaza Solidarity Encampment.'' Nearby the encampment on the main quad, pro-Israel flags and tributes to hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023, are being arranged. Talks are ongoing between students and the administration, days after Columbia University President Nemat ''Minouche'' Shafik called the NYPD onto the college campus to arrest scores of pro-Palestine students who refused to dismantle protest encampments on the main campus quad. The standoff and arrests occurred after President Shafik had faced questions before Congress on campus antisemitism and enforcement of rules against protests. Demonstrators are demanding investment transparency, divestment from Israel in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Gaza War, and amnesty for students disciplined for participation in the protests.
