Toulouse: Kanaks Gathered In Protest Of The Widening Of The Electorate In New-Caledonia

A man wrapped in the Kanaky's flag is walking in front of a sheet reading 'Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique support a free Kanaky Stop to the killings of Kanaks'. New Caledonians (Kanaks) of Toulouse are gathering in protest against the constitutional revision of the French Constitution by French President Macron. The revision is expanding the electorate who can vote in local elections. Kanaks are saying they are already outnumbered by French people coming from the metropole, and the widening launched by Macron will be catastrophic for them. People from Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Guyana are also coming. They are explaining this is plain colonialism. Since the vote on the law to widen the electorate, riots are happening in New Caledonia, and the French government is sending riot police and military to quell the insurrection there. Seven people have already died. In Toulouse, France, on May 25, 2024. (Photo by Alain Pitton/NurPhoto)
