The Registan public square with its three madrasahs in Persian architecture, from left to right: Ulugh Beg Madrasah, Tilya-Kori Madrasah and Sher-Dor Madrasah. Madras is the Arabic word for educational institute or Islamic School. Samarkand is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site as Samarqand - Crossroads of Cultures while on Samarkand was named the 2023 World Tourism Capital by the UN World Tourism Organization UNWTO.
