Nepali Human Rights Activists Defy Rains And Continue Protests In Kathmandu
A group of human rights activists are taking shelter under plastic sheets as it is raining heavily during a sit-in protest in Kathmandu, Nepal, on August 10, 2024. The human rights activists are demanding the deposition of Badshah Kurmi, a sitting minister in the Lumbini Province government who is accused of the murder of Nirmala Kurmi. Badshah, a Congress leader and Provincial Assembly member in Lumbini, is the prime accused in Nirmala Kurmi's disappearance and the capture of her property. Nirmala, a resident of Banke district, disappeared mysteriously in 2010 and remains missing. The protesters are demanding Badshah's immediate removal as minister, the registration of a court case against him, and assurance of security for the protesters. Badshah, the minister for Forest and Environment in the Lumbini government, is second in the Cabinet hierarchy after Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya of the CPN-UML.
