Shooting Leaves Man With Life Threatening Injuries At Pro-Israeli Protest In Newton Massachusetts
Blood, medical debris, and crime scene tape are at the scene of a shooting that results in a man sustaining life-threatening injuries at a pro-Israeli protest in Newton, Massachusetts, United States, on September 12, 2024. A Framingham man faces charges after he allegedly shoots another man who tackles him at a pro-Israel protest in Newton on Thursday, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announces. The shooting happens around 6:40 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Street and Harvard Street. Speaking several hours later at Newton Police Headquarters, Ryan says a group of pro-Israeli demonstrators gathers on one side of Washington Street. Shortly before the shooting, another person walks down the opposite side of the street. ''Words are exchanged back and forth across the street,'' Ryan says. Ultimately, the person from the other side of the street ''comes very rapidly across the street and tackles one of the demonstrators.'' Ryan identifies the man who is tackled as 47-year-old Scott Hayes. She says a scuffle ensues during which Hayes shoots the man who runs across the street. Ryan does not identify the man who is shot but says he suffers life-threatening injuries and is receiving care at a local hospital. Police arrest Hayes and charge him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and violation of a constitutional right causing injury, according to Ryan. Hayes is expected to be arraigned in Newton District Court. Ryan says Hayes legally owns the gun that he allegedly uses in this incident. While waiting for more information, friends of the pro-Israeli protesters say they rush to the scene. ''We don't know what the shooting is all about,'' one person says before the update from Ryan. ''It might be related to the demonstration or just a poor coincidence. We don't know right now.'' Speaking after Ryan, Newton Acting Police Chief George McMains says police will add extra patrols at local houses of worship in the coming days.
