Basilicata Drought, The Situation Of The Monte Cotugno Dam
Basilicata, like several areas in southern Italy, still suffers from drought. The Monte Cotugno dam, built between 1970 and 1982 along the course of the Sinni River, is the largest earthen dam in Europe. Water levels in the reservoir are low compared to the possible capacity of the reservoir, which at its maximum can reach 530 million m3. From the images, the body of water leaves large portions of land uncovered. The low rainfall affects some productive sectors in the area, particularly agriculture and livestock. In October, some fundamental work is planned for the reservoir so that it can reach greater capacity. (Photo by Paolo Manzo/NurPhoto)
